Company History
Tim Creenan started in the electronic security field in 1975 working for a large locally owned security firm. He performed various jobs including central station dispatcher, installer, and service technician. That company was eventually sold and Tim pursued a degree in Electronic Engineering at State University College at Buffalo. After graduating in 1982, Tim continued in the electronic security field with another company until he and his wife, Maryann founded Amherst Alarm, Inc.
Dedicated to serve the Western New York area, the company began with a small efficient staff that included Tim, Maryann and a part time installer. Tim handled the sales, service and supervised the installations while Maryann managed the administrative side of the business. Today Amherst Alarm has about 40 employees. Fifteen are installers and/or service techs, all of whom have been factory trained by the security manufacturers that supply us with products. Training is very important for the company and our installers, who are all certified by the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA).
Amherst Alarm has its own computerized UL monitoring center, featuring the leading edge hardware and software. Keeping up with the leading edge of technology is a high priority for Tim and the staff. For instance, we offer installation of a backup radio network for alarm monitoring that offers our customers a secure way of transmitting alarm signals to our monitoring center.
Beyond technology, we are proud of the professional and personal service we provide in every division of the company. Our monitoring staff has generated more referrals from satisfied customers who have spread the word than any advertising program we could have done.
Amherst Alarm has also made a name for itself by concentrating on developing a reputation with the area's finest home builders, who are a very demanding group of customers. Schedules have to be kept to and jobs must be completed on time. The ability of Amherst Alarm to meet the builder’s schedule is a big factor in the growth of the company’s new build business. Quality is another important factor that keeps the builders calling Amherst Alarm to do more jobs. All work is laid out and inspected personally by Tim to keep the levels of quality high.
Commercial accounts also comprise a large percentage of Amherst’s account base, including the Department of The Treasury, U.S. Customs Service, national fast food chains, Applebee’s national restaurant chain, Lucent Technologies, State University of Buffalo, North American Health Care, churches, local hospitals and medical centers and many local factories and storage facilities.
Through the years we have added to our product line and diversified beyond security. One of the most popular non security items available is the Beam Central Cleaning system. It ties in great with home builders and the company’s existing customer base as well. Our other products are music intercoms, wall safes, in wall speakers and audio / video systems. Customers know that they will receive the same great service for these products as they get for their security system.
Steady controlled growth seems to be the way that Amherst Alarm has gained market share since 1984 and we will continue to move ahead into the future with the same mission, the same vision as when we started.
