Signs of spring are finally arriving! As temperatures rise, now is a great time to make sure your home is secure during the warmer months ahead.
When the weather gets nicer, people begin spending more time outside – but unfortunately that also includes the burglars and others who may be targeting your home. Plus, burglary isn’t the only danger you need to worry about this spring.
Here are some quick tips to make your home safer:
- Check smoke detectors The start of daylight savings time is a great reminder to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Remember, the best way to protect your family is through monitored smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. In the event of smoke, fire, or unusual levels of Carbon Monoxide, a trained dispatcher from our local Monitoring Response Center will contact your local fire department immediately and send help to your home.
- Mow the grass A clean-cut lawn doesn’t just make your property look nice – it helps deter burglars. High, uncut grass is a sign to burglars that the property may be vacant.
- Lock doors and windows When the temperatures rise, it’s tempting to leave doors and windows open to let the fresh air in after a long winter. Make sure you lock storm doors and close everything when you’re away, or at night, to keep unwanted guests out.
- Use outdoor lights A dark, unlit home is a welcome invitation for burglars. Keep your home well lit with low-watt LED bulbs, and use Anet Interactive to remotely schedule lights, giving the appearance that you are home.
- Put yard tools away After a long day of spring yard work, be sure to put the tools back in the shed or garage. Leaving tools lying around puts them at risk of being stolen, and sends a signal to burglars that you’re not paying close attention to your property.
- Plan carefully before vacation Going away for Spring Break or vacation? Keep an extra car parked prominently in the driveway (or ask a neighbor to park their car there) to create the appearance that you’re home.
- Don’t tell the world you’re going away. It may be tempting to post pictures of your vacation on Facebook, or to change your voicemail message to let people know you’re away. But both of these actions make it easy for savvy burglars to know it’s safe to enter your home.
- Consider a home security system Without a doubt, the best way to protect yourself, your family and your home is to have a professional security system installed. Simply having a home security system deters burglars while also providing you with the peace of mind of 24/7 monitoring in the event of forced entry, fire, carbon monoxide and other dangers. According to the Alarm Industry Research & Educational Foundation, “An installed burglar alarm makes a dwelling less attractive to the would-be and active intruders and protects the home without displacing burglaries to nearby homes.” For more information about the study, click here.
