Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of the year. You spend time with family and friends, eat delicious food, and you can get some great deals on gifts for the holidays! There are many things to be thankful for during Thanksgiving, but there are also some safety tips to consider so your holiday can be relaxing and carefree.
Monitor Your Cooking
You may be spending time with your family while cooking in the kitchen, but make sure you don’t forget about your turkey in the oven! Unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths according to the NFPA. Stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the food to lessen the risk of this happening to you. Also, test your smoke alarms before you start cooking just to be safe!
Home Safety While on Vacation
Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays for travel. When you are away, this also heightens the risk of a burglar breaking into your home.
Be sure to:
- Let your neighbors know you will be gone so they can keep an eye on your home.
- Inform us you will be on vacation by filling out a vacation notice.
- Hold your mail and/or newspapers so they do not pile up and show you are away.
- Don’t announce your travel plans on social media.
Carbon Monoxide Risks
The stove can be a major source of carbon monoxide, especially if it’s being used for several hours at a time. Turn on your kitchen fan or vents, open windows periodically, and make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working properly.
We hope you have a wonderful, safe, and very Happy Thanksgiving! As always, if you have any questions, give us a call at 716-632-4600. Gobble, gobble!
