4^th of July Fire Safety Tips

The Fourth is a great day to enjoy hot dogs, fireworks, and spend time with your family. But along with these fun festivities, there can be a trip to the emergency room if you aren’t careful. Don’t let a fire ruin your holiday – stay safe this weekend with these fire safety tips.

Monitor the Barbecue

While you’re cooking up some hamburgers and hotdogs make sure to keep an eye on the grill! More fires are reported on the 4^th of July than any other day of the year according to the National Fire Protection Association.

1. Keep a 3-foot safe zone around your grill. Make sure it is not too close to your home, deck, or landscaping.
2. Keep children and pets away from the grill at all times.
3. Avoid wearing loose clothing that can easily catch on fire.
4. Remove grease on a regular basis so it cannot be ignited.

Enjoy Fireworks Responsibly

In 2017, at least eight people died and about 12,900 were injured badly enough to require medical attention from fireworks-related incidents. It’s always a smart idea to leave igniting fireworks to the professionals.

1. Do not use homemade fireworks or disassemble pre-made fireworks.
2. Never light multiple fireworks off at the same time.
3. Do not allow young children to handle fireworks.
4. Always have a fire extinguisher nearby.
